Citizenship for Kiwis just got fairer! New Zealand sub 444 holders Great News – direct pathway to citizenship

Citizenship – New Zealand sub 444 holders Great News – direct pathway to citizenship

A new pathway for New Zealand citizens to become citizens in Australia without having to apply for permanent residency first!

From 1 July 2023, all Special Category Visa (subclass 444) holders – the visa granted to most New Zealand citizens on arrival – will be able to apply for Australian citizenship, providing they have lived in Australia for at least four years and comply with other eligibility requirements.

In commemoration of the 50-year anniversary of the 1973 Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangements, which grants Australians and New Zealanders freedom to visit, live and work in either country without restrictions.

The Australian government estimates the pathway will be available to about 350,000 New Zealanders living in Australia who arrived after 2001, when citizenship access was tightened for NZ citizens.
