As noted by Phillip Coorey “this new, specialised high-skilled migration scheme that will offer fast-tracked permanent residency to 5000 people a year, will target high-income earners with expertise in one of seven fields including fintech and space and advanced manufacturing.
And the Minister says in his press release:
The Government continues to focus on our skills based migration system with a new scheme called the Global Talent Initiative.
The Government is investing $12.9 million in the Initiative which will strengthen Australia’s ability to compete for the best and brightest skilled migrants from across the globe.
Internationally, there is intense competition for global talent. Australia needs to be at the forefront in attracting the best and the brightest to help grow a stronger economy and a more prosperous Australia.
Through the Global Talent Initiative, the Department of Home Affairs will be tasked with identifying and recruiting the brightest minds from around the world through active targeting and promotion in Australia and overseas.
Our Global Talent Officers are located in Berlin, Dubai, Santiago, Shanghai, Singapore, and Washington DC. They work across a number of countries in their region, and attend key industry events and expos to promote the program.

Expected salary threshold The high income threshold is currently AUD148,700. This figure is adjusted annually on 1 July.
